A virus is something that spreads through personal contact, from one person to the next. The speed at which it spreads is exponential. Viral Marketing works on the same concept. But in this case we are spreading ideas, promotions, and products, on an exponential basis. The effectiveness and speed with which this type of marketing can spread has been compared to that of a virus. And thus the term "Viral Marketing" was coined.
